Have a safe trip, my birdy friends!
Just about every Pacific golden plover in my neighborhood departed Hawaii in the afternoon on April 19, 2016. As of this writing -- they're flying non-stop to either Alaska, United States, or Siberia, Russia! Those places are over 2,000 miles away!
The only Pacific golden plovers in my neighborhood that didn't depart is one adult and one juvenile that feeds in the same grounds. Those birds moved into my neighborhood last year.
Last year, all of the Pacific golden plovers in my neighborhood departed Hawaii in the first week of May (I have the exact date written somewhere). It's not clear why they departed two weeks earlier this year?
"The Elite Plovers" (a nickname that I gave to the close three Pacific golden plovers in my block) was quite large before they departed. They was running much slower than normal... ?
April 21, 2016 Update: The one adult and one juvenile that didn't depart on April 19 departed on either the night of April 20, or the morning of April 21.
