But they're just visiting.
A small flock of a couple dozen Pacific golden plovers are currently resting on the Big Island of Hawaii before they fly further south!
Those birds will most likely spend their wintering season in the Republic of Kiribati region, which is approximately 1,250 miles away from the Big Island.
You can distinguish visiting plovers by their feeding behavior. If they're sticking close together while looking for food, they're visiting.
The Pacific golden plovers that I observe on the Big Island typically returns in the middle of August.
