Betsy DeVos was confirmed as education secretary on Tuesday, after Vice President Mike Pence broke a historic 50-50 tie in the Senate.
The entire Democratic caucus of 48 senators and 2 Republicans (Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Susan Collins of Maine) voted against DeVos.
This marked the first time that a vice president’s tie-breaking vote was needed to confirm a Cabinet secretary.
DeVos is a billionaire who has no prior experience working in education. She is a fierce proponent of school vouchers that would allow parents to use public funding to have their children attend private schools.
A free market system could potentially do more harm than good, considering some charter schools are notorious for employing less qualified teachers, while operating as for-profit entity.
Rural public schools could potentially take the biggest hit considering their budget is already tight as is. Since Hawaii has dozens of rural public schools, their educational system could be a mess in the future...
