Understanding the English language at the intermediate level should be a requirement in restaurants where orders should move swiftly.
Today at a busy restaurant, I asked for "one apple turnover, please," and the server that took my order confirmed by saying "one parfait." When I replied by saying "no, one apple turnover, please," my server looked confused.
I, the paying customer, needed to explain to that server the definition of a "turnover." After that explanation, my server replied by saying, "oh, one piece of apple pie."
I then needed to explain the differences between an apple pie and an apple turnover...
