The crater, located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii, is currently active with lava flowing in an open vent fluctuating from 70 to 150 meters below the crater floor.

According to Hawaiian mythology, Halemaumau Crater is home to Pele, Hawaiian Goddess of Fire and Volcanoes. You can learn about Pele in the book "Pele, Volcano Goddess of Hawai'i: A History."
